Joy & Others:
Forgive my ignorance but again if it doesn't earn me points I generally know nothing about it. Can a dog get poison Ivy/Oak or such?

Dunno about poison oak, but I don't think they get poison ivy, if I remember correctly (we're desert dwellers now).

The oils that cause the allergic reaction (the itchy rash) generally won't penetrate the dog's coat down to the skin. But, YOU can get it from petting your dog if s/he's been running through it!
If in doubt, check with the vet!

After talking to several vets, who had never seen a case of it on a dog, I ran into a breeder who HAD. My dog and her dog are both American Bulldogs (with very little hair during Ivy season). The solution is a daily bath with oatmeal bar soap to cut the oils and soothe the itching. Takes 3-5 days. She said her dog grew out of the allergy at about 3 yrs old.

Although it has never been diagnosed at this I beleive that My Toby has gotten Poison Ivy on his snout where there is a lack of fur. I know that in other cases I have gotten it from him.

Although I never thought dogs could get poison ivy (none of my other dogs ever has), my young bitch did just that when out of coat. She had been in and out of the stuff when we were working on fencing and her belly and the insides of her legs were covered. She had the same "rash" that my hubby had all over him.
