Sorry this passage is not about a working dog but that of commitment to ones pet and going that extra mile that for the most part of us, would not do.
This story is about a dog named Topaz. A dog born and engulfed in with bone cancer.
There was never a thought about disposing Puppy Topaz from the owners point of view. They gave him a place in their family and based on this proceeded to find whatever help they could.
This mean't what seemed in the beginning 12 years ago endless almost daily trips to the vets for special cancer fighting treatments that included Bone Marrow Transplants.
The upside to the direction these owners took that was a major burden to the family in time and money was that Topaz was spared death and won that battle with the big "C".
The down side was that Topaz developed a major aversion to going to the vets as a result of the endless invasions to his young puppy body that no living being ever want to go through.
The memories of the vets office, the tile floors and the smells associated and imprinted in this dogs demeanor was just to much for this dogs nervous system.
Till the day he died Topaz carried with him a fear of the Vet environment that would send him into jellied nervousness. He was scared of the vets and was something we just never could eliminate from his tortured mind.
A month ago Topaz was with us as he has been for the past decade for boarding when the owners travel and one day while on a potty walk Topaz began to shake, fall to the ground and convulse. An odour eminated from him that I have only experienced once before and I knew in my heart that the Cancer was back and this time it was not to be beaten.
I make the call to the family who are at their European home and gave the bad news, awaiting their instructions.
They cut short this trip abroad. A trip that they have been taking almost every few weeks themselves.
They return as a complete family. Mom, Dad and the four grown children who have returned to the nest from all corners of the earth to be with another family member in need.
Once the whole family arrived back to the Toronto Home a few days later. The decision was made to not take Topaz back to the vets and renew his childhood fears.
The next day, the vet arrived at Topaz's home and he was spared any more suffering from the renewed Cancer in his body and was put to sleep in the back garden he so loved to play and walk around that was devoid of the fear he harboured.
Good Bye Topaz. You were a great dog, pet and loved by a family that showed no hesitation to go that extra mile.
Three days later. The family again returned to their homes abroad to continue their own spots in life. Including the Mother of this unique family that cut short their trip to Europe. A trip that they have made every few weeks for the past two years by the same wise Mother who held and stroked Topaz as he moved to God's hands. The same Mother who traveled back to Europe to continue her own Radical Cancer Treatments to fight the same monster that is now ravaging her own body.

Jerry--
WOW.
And what a remarkable counterpoint to the people we see so often in dog rescue that will take their faithful old dog and dump him at the pound (or worse, in the country) because they got a new puppy and couldn't be bothered caring for the old guy...

Thanks for sharing that with us all.
It restores my faith in human nature.
