Dear Ed,

I wanted you to know, I sold Rommel to the sheriff Dept, I work for. It's a long story, to keep it short. We have a Mali, the handler had quit only 3 months of having the dog. No body else wanted to handle him and didn't know how to handle him. I was asked to take the dog and be his handler, at that time I had already purchased Rommel from you. I made it my mission to train Rommel. Due to the circumstances and the Sheriff's out look, and of course working with the Maliniois for sometime. I couldn't let him go to someone who didn't have the knowledge and skill to handle him. And Rommel had so much to offer as a working dog I couldn't let him stay home and go to waste. So after training Rommel the dept., agreed to purchase him.

The new handler is Kathy Jarvis she is very eager to learn. They have bonded well together and are working well together. Rommel has her trained well. If you know what I mean HA, HA. To let you know Rommel is doing an outstanding job.

On 04-25-00, officers has a car chase, the suspect's vehicle wrecked and fled on foot. Kathy showed up and went to last place seen, where the officers stopped. Before she could get started, the suspect over heard her saying I got the dog, where do you need me to start. The suspects were three feet from the officers, got up from heavy bush pushed the officer to the ground. Before the suspect got away, 3 officers jumped him before Kathy could send Rommel. Then early in the morning another car chase, the suspects wrecked 2 suspects fled on foot, Kathy and Rommel tracked caught the first one. Then track the second, Kathy told me they came to a creek bed and Rommel started barking at the water. Her cover officers and her were wondering why he was barking, and kept looking around. Kathy looked in the water with her flash light, she saw the suspect underneath the water using a pipe for an airway.

Your Truly Ted Xanthakis

Lektra vom Leerburg

Dear Ed,

It has been a while since I last wrote, and I want to update you on what Lektra (Nancy x Wolf -7/06/96) has been doing in obedience. In January 1999 I showed her in four UKC Novice classes and she placed all four times with two firsts and two thirds. Her scores were 198+, 196, 1961/2+, and 1981/2 (the + indicates that we won a runoff). Needless to say, I was thrilled with her debut. That spring we showed in eight AKC Novice classes and she placed in seven of them. She had an average score of 196 with a high of 198 and a low of 194; and even got High in Trial at a Specialty. Her scores entitled her to a Dog World Award from both the AKC and UKC trials. I recently learned that the Delaney System statistics for the first half of 1999 list Lektra as the #10 GSD in the nation. (She earned this ranking by getting a point for each dog that she beat whenever she placed in the ribbons). I am very proud of her.

In September we started her Open competition to earn her AKC CDX. Lektra did this with style. Even though she had a few bobbles in the beginning, she earned her CDX in five trials and then qualified six more times. Out of eleven shows, she qualified and placed nine times with six firsts, one second and two thirds. She had a high of 1981/2 and a low of 1921/2 with an average score of 195. WOW! I am so pleased with her consistency and her attitude in the ring. She has such nice work ethics and enjoys what she is doing. It really helps to have a dog with good food and toy drives. This makes my training so much easier.

This January, Lektra earned her UKC CDX out of Open B in three shows with scores of 1941/2, 197, and 195 and placed twice with a second and a third. Her official name is now: UCDX Lektra vom Leerburg CGC, CDX. We have been diligently working on our utility exercises and hope to be ready to show this spring. Although she has spoiled me with success and I really do like having nice scores and placements, she is a wonderful companion and I would love her just as much even if she didn't do as well.

Lektra has a fun-loving streak and is quick to grab a toy and tease you with it because she loves to be chased. She is very devoted to her family, but she is definitely my dog. Her confidence has been very important to her obedience career. I feel safe when she is around because she is quick to pick out and alert to suspicious or different looking people and things in the environment. I couldn't ask for a better companion.

I am grateful for your experience in understanding and knowing GSDs and for your high breeding standards. I told you that I wanted a dog with OTCH potential and a whole list of other requirements, and you gave me exactly what I wanted. Thanks, again, for sending me the "perfect puppy" for my wants and needs.

Sincerely,
Sheryl Powers

Hi Ed,

Just a note to let you know that Darja finished her MXJ today.  She did it in style by earning a Double Q.  I am now retiring her from agility because (1) she isn’t fast enough for us to get a MACH in a reasonable amount of time and (2) her left hip is showing some deterioration since her last set of x-rays 10 months ago and I don’t want to wear it out faster.  I can now concentrate on her obedience career.

In September Darja made her debut in Open A at a local Houston obedience trial and won High in Trial with a 197.  Talk about starting out with a bang.  She knows the utility exercises, but doesn’t have all the distance and proofing needed to be reliable.  Now I will have more time to concentrate on making her the best she can be.  I have high hopes of her earning an OTCH.  Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Just wanted to give you an update on Sere. Sere earned her C.G.C. this summer, and she received her CD title the 16th of December in Cleveland. She's a wonderful dog, and leans quickly. I've leaned not to expect any praise or respect for her, when we go to these obedience trials. Most GSD people don't like the way she looks. But when they see a Leerburg dog in the trial, I have people come to check her out. I think she is beautiful. Sere behaves very well at shows. I love Sere dearly.

Thanks again for a wonderful dog

Nina at 3 months old

Dear Ed,

It is my pleasure to inform you that Nina is doing fine. She is a ball chasing fris-bee carrying hell-raising 8 month old now. We are very pleased.

At about 50 pounds, she is a smaller version of her adult self. Ther are no health problems and temperment is excellent.

I spent a lot of time doing puppy obedience with her this past winter. I enrolled her in a beginner obedience class class at 7 months and she is doing well in that rather chaotic setting. Unless we have some sort of set-back, I hope to have her in a Nov. B class by mid summer.

Our 9 year old male has adjusted rather well to Nina. When she is on the rampage, he will retreat to the safety of his crate. He has drawn the line at one point, however: He sleeps at the foot of our bed and Nina is not allowed in. She can sleep in the hall outside the door. Seniority has its perks.

Dear Mr. Frawley:

A letter to update you on 2 dogs that we have purchased from you.

The first dog I purchased from you is from Orfey/Derby male DOB 4-95. His name is Randy V Leerburg CD. He is probably the best male dog I have ever purchased from anyone; I have bought quite a few dogs in the past only to be disappointed. He got his CD at 1- 1/2 years of age, always placing 2nd in his classes, in all breed shows none the less.

He has the soundness of temperament I have ever seen in a dog. He knows exactly when to be protective and when to be a sweetheart. We now have a 2-year old child and you would not want a better babysitter I trust him with her life without a doubt. He has NEVER been afraid of anything in his entire life.

And as a stud dog he has always produced exceptional temperament and sound hips. He will now be 4 years old in May of this year and still loves to work with much enthusiasm. He will be shown this Spring for his Open Obedience Title.

The second dog I purchased from you is a Chucho/Holly female DOB 8-96. She is a beautiful brown sable with a full coat. Her name is Orina v Leerburg CD. The exact same can be said for her as the male. Her temperment from day one when we picked her up from Philadelphis Int. Airport has always been superb. She earned her CD in fast fashion at just a little over 1 year old.

Needless to say I am more than happy with the quality of your breedings. She will be shown to her Open Obedience Title this year.

Orina has been bred to Randy and we are expecting puppies in about 2 weeks. We are sure they will carry on the same qualities everyone would want in a great German Shepherd Dog.

Enclosed is a photo of Randy and Orina as you can see for yourself they are 2 dogs anyone would be proud of I am so glad that we own them!!

We check out your web site every now and then and we did notice that you would like people to notify you about titles that your breedings have produced so you may now add these to your list.

Thank you for breeding such quality dogs.

Sincerely,
Bonnie & Floyd Updegrove

I purchased a Chucho/Peggy puppy from you about four years ago. I wanted to write you a short note to update you on Dina vom Leerburg.

Back in 1994, I bought Elke with the objective of having a family pet. Secondarily, I wanted to get involved with the sport of schutzhund. She has been excellent in both categories. Elke lives in the house with my young children and has been a great family dog. When we go to the park, she plays on the playground equipment (stairs, bridges & tunnels) with my kids. At the park, people often comment that they can't believe a German Shepherd can be so social. Most have never experienced working line shepherds with proper socialization.

Elke runs with my wife in the mornings and will play for hours in the yard with whatever she finds (soccer ball, Kong, dog bowl). However, until my children are older, they can't play ball with Elke. She is too fast and unrelenting in pursuit of the ball whether tennis ball or basketball. While Elke possesses extreme drive on the schutzhund field, she is remarkably calm in the house.

Elke has participated in various community seminars. One seminar was designed to raise funds and community acceptance for the starting of a police K-9 program. She mingled with the audience and gave an obedience demo. Later in the program, she did a protection demo. She was very effective in illustrating that a well-bred dog with proper temperament can be trained in bitework without being a liability.

With respect to Elke's working ability, I could see early on that she had strong drives. However, after 4 years in the sport, I now truly appreciate my good fortune of getting Elke as my first dog. I have met handlers in schutzhund for 10-20 years that haven't had a dog with her potential.

While I am admittedly biased, I have not seen many dog, let alone bitches, that possess her balance of sociability with extreme drives and hardness. Because of Elke's potential, I got more involved in schutzhund than I ever imagined. I truly believe that if she had a top handler with more time to devote to the sport, she could have consistently been on the podium at national events.

Even with a first-time handler, Elke was high-in-trial while earning each of her titles (None of the titles were earned on her home field). She has V'd in all phases and competed in two national events, including the 1998 AWDF where she earned high-in-trial. Some scores follow:

  • Schutzhund I High-in-Trial (92-90-94P=276 points)
  • Schutzhund II High-in-Trial (97-96-95P=288 points)
  • 1998 AVVDF Championships - Denver High-in-Trial (96-93-96P=285 points)
  • Schutzhund III High-in-Trial (93-97-92P=282 points)

1998 Schutzhund III National Championships - Denver (97-91-80P=268 points)
I was hoping to compete with her at national events over the next few years until she hit her prime, but it appears I will have to retire her from competition due to a neck injury. The injury became evident at the 1998 Nationals.

To keep you informed as a breeder, the following is a quick overview of Elke's tendencies in each phase of schutzhund. If you have time, give me a call and I'll tell you more about Elke's working ability.

Tracking: She is an excellent tracking dog. My challenge has always been to slow her down on the track rather than motivation.

Obedience: Extreme ball drive and willingness to please. She is a very flashy dog (fast & focused) in the heeling and recalls. She has so much prey drive, I taught her dumbbells through prey and never had a problem. She is so loaded and sometimes vocal before picking up the dumbbell, people have asked me if I used electric for the retrieves. The answer is no - I haven't used electric at all. Before the sendout, she wants to find the ball so badly that my challenge is keeping her in the heel position and quite. I have found she shows best (upbeat yet smooth) if I can maintain her at about3/4drive. If I load her too much before entering the field, she gets too bumpy and vocal.

Besides her excellent drives for both food and the ball, a major strength from a training standpoint is that she loads with corrections rather than shutting down. She is harder than most males - it amazes people. Additionally, she can stay in high drive for a long-time, if required. While I normally keep her obedience sessions short, she always has the drive to work a little longer to get one more success, even in hot weather.

Protection: Elke is extremely driven in the bite work - her trademark move is humping the helper's leg after outing. It has cost me a few points over the years, but the crowd loves it. While Elke is a very willing dog on the obedience field, she challenges my authority during the control work on the protection field. I love it - it's like working a handler hard male at times. She has extreme prey drive, but her bark-and-hold is in the man's face (controlled aggression), not directed at the sleeve. She also loves the fight and loads with a strong drive and stick hits. The challenge has always been to keep her quite and obedient in the secondary work.

Ed,

How have you been lately? I hope... good. I am still waiting to move to the east coast but have been training in Ring Sport in Chicago lately with Adrian Moreno. Lynx is doing great in Ring sport. I hope to be able to title her next year. I have been jumping around a lot... just never found a good club to train with here. I could have gone to train with Randy Rhodes but my girlfriend is into Ring sport so I thought I'd give it a try and I love it. She has very nice drives for the sport, and nerves. The only drawback to this bitch is that since she is black, she gets hot very fast in the summer and tires. All in all, I am pleased with her... she is a hard bitch. I am looking forward to breeding her maybe next year once I find a really good dog to breed her to. I have a question for you. I would like to breed to a dog like Chucho... a dog with very intense, but focused drives and nice temperament. I won't send her to anybody who hasn't had experience breeding though... because she isn't an easy breeder from what Joan Harris told me. I want to make sure it happens correctly this next time for sure. Are you ever going to offer stud service again, or ship frozen semen on your stud dogs? If so, I want to get on "the list"... I am interested. You have the experience that nobody else seems to have. A short note on Tito. He is still going strong. I have been giving him Grand Flex and it is amazing... he still never stops. This dog is in drive even when he sleeps. The dog still teaches me things every day.

Keep in touch and take a look at the pic.
Jeff
