Dear Readers,
Here it is, Raw Meaty Bones, ready for consumption.
In October 1996 I started writing down what I know, and know to be important, and hoped that one day it would appear as a book. The guidelines I set, written across the top of each page, were: 'Engage, inform, entertain, happy.' And the working title became Happy Zone. I knew that the subject matter was often dark and disturbing, but I hoped that working in the 'Zone' I could convery information which would empower readers and lead to greater happiness - for people and pets.
If you are a pet owner may I suggest that you first of all turn to Appendix C on page 327. Here you will find a diet based on raw carcasses and raw meaty bones - a diet tested in nauture's great evolutionary experiment and found to be best suited to the needs of carnivores. (It's important to get the pets onto the right diet whilst you progress through the rest of the book.)
There are many other points of entry to the book; the chapters are more-or-less self contained. But wherever you start I hope that you finish happy and empowered to make a difference.
Best Wishes,
Tom Lonsdale
Tom Lonsdale admits he was slow to recognise problems associated with feeding canned and dry pet foods. As a 1972 graduate of the Royal Veterinary College, London, he followed conventional teaching but by the late 1980s a series of "wake up calls' alerted him to the dangers. Together with a small group of veterinarians, the Raw Meaty Bone Lobby, he set out to research the facts.
Then as now vested interests were the main obstacle to obtaining information and alerting the community. It also became apparent the 'science' can stand in the way of progress and systems intended to protect pets and the community can do the opposite. ''The truth is rarely pure, and never simple" , but this book lets the truth speak for itself as it lifts the lid on the pet food industry/veterinary profession alliance.
A majority of pets suffer periodontal and other diet-related diseases - most have putrid breath, some develop Foul-mouth AIDS. In 1993 the Australian Veterinary Association reported:
Periodontal disease is arguably the most common disease condition seen in small animal practice and its effects on the gums and teeth can significantly affect the health and will being of affected animals. This is sufficient in itself to give reason for concern. Proof of additional systemic effects is not necessary to justify further action.
But the authorities are slow to act. This book
explains why, and the practical solutions pet owners and veterinarians
can adopt for themselves. If you own a pet, or know someone who does,
this book's for you.
